Karoo 2 crashed / restarted itself mid ride, data lost
CompletedTowards the end of my ride today, the Karoo 2 restarted itself out of nowhere - the Hammerhead logo appeared, followed by the rest of the startup sequence. I think I'm the 4th user with this issue since the last software update. Climber functionality was active and on the screen while the crash happened - maybe it's related to that, since this was changed in the last update.
The Karoo did not enter any sort of ride recovery procedure, and the ride up to that point (~40 miles) seems lost, it does not show up on the device. I started recording a ride again after the crash, for the remaining 1.6 miles. That one does show up in the device's ride list.
I tried recovering the lost ride via USB on my Mac, but it does not show up in the FitFiles folder, and the temp folders are empty. What's interesting is that the 1.6 mile ride after the crash, which does appear on the device, does not show up in the FitFiles folder either...

I am on the latest release that still supports Di2, i.e. not on the very latest firmware version available.
Is the bug 100% certain fixed in newer versions? I am not keen on giving up Di2 support only to find out the bug is still there.
As for today's ride that I lost, any chance of recovering the data? Because if the data is recoverable, then I will definitely not upgrade the firmware so I can keep Di2 support and occasionally have to recover my data. (This was the first time this crash happened since I started using the Karoo 2 at the end of 2021).

Don’t think you’ll get that back I’m afraid. Maybe support can help? This was one of the reasons the issue was a big deal and a priority. Shame the Shimano request to pull the plug came when it did as yes, it’s totally fixed now on latest releases, plus a few other new features have become available too!!

Thanks for your help Andy. Good to hear it's fixed, so at least if I do decide to upgrade it won't be in vain.
Unfortunately I am not ready to drop Di2 support just yet, so I'm hoping this crash won't happen again. If it does, I'll have to make a decision between upgrading or selling the Karoo 2.

@Ruud, when this happened to me I was able to recover most of my ride by manually downloading the .fit file from the device over USB and repairing it using one of the on-line tools (sorry, can't remember which one, I just googled).
I know the loss of Di2 is a big pain for some - shame on Shimano for their customers! But as is the case with any software - if you want to complain about bugs, you need to be on the latest version...

Nigel - Thanks, I will turn off the audio prompts. Perhaps it helps.
Petr - I will try connecting my Karoo to a PC and seeing if I can find the .fit file. If that works, then I will probably not upgrade. I upgraded my device every time a new firmware was released however I stopped doing that once it was announced that Di2 support would be dropped.

I wonder if this thread should be marked as closed fixed - assuming the audio driver problem is a good fix for most people’s problems - especially variable owners. Otherwise this just becomes a dumping ground for similar bugs/issues/old firmware complaints and we lose clarity.
as it is right now, you have to go to the next to last page to find Ali’s posting about a fix.
