Elevation gain totally wrong
Hi there,
I know this topic was adressed several times before but it was obviously not fixed until now.
The elevation gain numbers my Karoo 2 device gives out after each ride have been inaccurate ever since and I had to correct them via Strava. This has been a big disturbance but I was waiting patiently for a fix. And sometimes the numbers were not too bad.
But since a few weeks (can't really tell a concrete date) the numbers are just rubbish. Please see my 2 examples below:

This is a ride from today in Hammerhead Dashboard. It says the total elevation gain was 1348 meters !
In Strava I used the function to correct elevation gain and I got this (which is definitely closer to the truth!):

It calculated 261 meters. That's nearly 1000 meters difference! Totally inacceptable!
And if you look closely to the graphs, you can see that they match. So the device seems to measure correctly when there is a climb or even just a short elevation.
But what you can also see, when you closely to the graph from Hammerhead Dashboard is, that there are short spikes all over. As far as I can see, they occur mostly when descending.
Maybe that's part of the problem? Can somebody confirm that?
Find out where those spikes come from and eliminate them. I think we will have way better numbers then.
I have loads of examples like that. all with the same observation.

Sorry Olivier,
your solution is not fixing the overall issues. Yes, it's how to deal with it but the problem persists, people (me included) got SIM cards specifically to not rely on mobile phones sync during and after rides to rely on the data Karoo produces.
It's a feature that Hammerhead sells to you but is not bothering to look into (a bit harsh but i see no response by the Team in this thread) or not able to fix this issue.
Regardless if it's a software or hardware issue, we need to know if it's fixable or not. Even if it's not, i would at-least not wait for it any longer. if its fixable please provide a timeline.
The way Support is handling the issue is why i would not flatout buy a new Hammerhead device when my Karoo 2 dies. -
thanks Olivier For your answer but iagree with Sam.
I dont want to choose between (livetrack , internet connection ....) and correct elevation data, that is very important in route for me.
I hope this problem can be fixed or at least the support team can assure us that this problem cannot be fixed.
workaround is to recover my old gps watch and use the garmin livetrack.

lot's of "small complains" on this forum. BUT, we are talking elavation and security here....Hammerhead should be ashamed of provide us with a bike computer that doesn't do correct elevation or forcing us to choose between security (sim is the only way to activate Livetracking) or reliaability.
And they are not replacing units either...
They know, they've known for months....they might be working at it...if that's really the case, not fast enough. I've believe we've paid good money for a device that should deliver on all the basics at least....

I'm having the same issue, today actual elevation gain was 356m, but over 2000m from K2. I don't have a SIM card in so can't be that. Also have friends with the same unit and riding in same conditions but theirs is correct. It seems very hit & miss. I have raised a ticket with them too as I assume just commenting here does nothing in terms of a fix from Hammerhead

There is a known bug without sim card as well. I have raised a ticket in November and got the answer that the issue is under investigation. They are not sure if its hardware of software related, but it sound a bit BS. I think all units would have problems if it was a software bug. I was promised to be contacted once they find the solution. No answers yet.

Considering that my K2 exhibits this issue all the time in Germany and (practically) never in Finland, I can’t see how it would be hardware-related. My guess would be that it has something to do with some parameter in the GSM base station configuration that does not conform to the expectations of the K2 where this occurs.

I got a new device because of a charging problem with my Karoo2. The old device was very accurate. I noticed the discrepancy on the first rides with the one. To me it sounds more like a hardware problem. (no SIM card in use) This is probably also the reason why there is no longer a statement from Hammerhead here.

I have the same problem in Belgium. The weird thing is that when I upload a map from komoot to dashboard there is already a big difference in ascent. So it is wrong even before the ride. example:
route 1: on komoot: ascent 290m Hammerhead dashboard : 332m (before riding)
After completing the ride: K2 : 332m Apple Watch : 265m Strava (after correction from K2 data): 259m
Other example, a planned route: Routeyou: 401m ascent Komoot: 380m Dashboard: 466m.
No sim card in use here.

Hi there. Same problem here (Switzerland). But - like @alexandre.delaigue also mentioned, that the miscalculation of the elevation gain is also, if you import a gpx into the dashboard.hammerhead.io? (Strava or Komoot - both deliver wrong elevation results in the hh dashboard).
If you take this route for example (https://www.strava.com/clubs/185376/group_events/1352933#view), in Strava 561m of elevation gain, export it from Strava and import it in dashboard.hammerhead.io as route (gpx) - you then have 788m of elevation gain in the Hammerhead dashboard route!
It looks like there is a bug in the elevation model of the used maps.
@hammerhead Support: Please be aware of that.Strava:

Same tour (gpx export out of strava > import to hammerhead dashboard:

addendum: just sent an e-mail to the support about this. Will keep you informed if I hear something.

I bought my Karoo 2 last week. Used for the first time at Amstel without a SIM. Imported route from Ride GPS as a tcx. It wouldn’t load. Then when I get home the total elevation is double reality! After reading all the posts on this thread and all the others I must say it is more than disappointing. How can a GPS manufacturer let this continue for years. I have yet to see a reply from Hammerhead either. Do they actually read these posts? I am sending it back. Sticking with Wahoo despite their crap build quality. Hammerhead = FAIL such a shame. But a nice looking product isn’t enough. It should work 100% too.

I was in direct contact with the customer support for a few times now. I did some test-rides and shared the data with Hammerhead. There is definitely a bug with the elevation gain when using a SIM card. Without SIM inside, the values are pretty the same as compared with a Garmin 520 and Coros Apex2 Pro. I also did a test with the auto-calibration mode on and off - no big difference here. The only thing I noticed, that the auto-calibration (elevation) is noticeably more battery draining.
The second error when importing a rout into the Hammerhead dashboard is also notices now at the SW-Team. There is the reason a different map model then used by other portals like komoot, strava...The bug with the SIM / elevation is now prioritized and should be fixed with a future firmware. The support was helpful and it seems that now the urgency is pretty clear there.
The bug with the "wrong" elevation model in the dashboard is also on the plan - but will take probably longer.
I think - there is someting going on now - keep fingers crossed. -
@Tom I had pretty much the same conversation with HH support 10 months ago and they totally understood the problem and told me that it will be fixed in the upcoming updates. I am not the only one, as you can read in this topic.
I don't know why they would finally solve this now that you contacted them, but we'll see.
