Karoo is designed around a metal-injection molded skeleton with high-impact resistance polycarbonate interlocking housing. It is sealed with a replaceable gasket and clamped shut with 8 screws. The cover houses endurance rated buttons with an affirmative mechanical click. It is finished with an all-weather paint finish and tested to our sealing and ruggedization standards.
It has an industry-leading protective glass made of 1.1mm thick Corning Gorilla Glass. We have custom-etched and finished this glass to reduce sharp reflections and improve daylight visibility. The Karoo housing has specific bezel design to reduce the chance of breaking the screen on an accidental drop. The in-line mount means that the Karoo is almost always protected in a rubber-side up event.
Karoo measures: 98 x 72 x 28 mm and weighs 168 grams. The screen is 3.5” inches diagonally.
The battery is a rechargeable 3200 mAh Lithium Polymer cell. It lasts up to 12-hours of runtime.
The total memory capacity is 16GB. Of this, 8.5GB of storage is reserved for Maps. The rest is more than enough to back up a year's worth of riding data and all the apps you may need.
2GB of DDR3 RAM actually means we can have some serious live-data capability.
We wanted to ensure accurate positioning and altitude data so we included an accelerometer, compass, and barometer. We have also included a temperature sensor that can give a reasonable estimate of ambient air temperature. The barometer is an industry-leading unit designed by Bosch. This means that we can direct you along GPX paths should you happen to lose satellite.
The Karoo can be used at temperatures as high as 70°C (158°F) and as low as -20°C (-4°F). For the best use, we recommend using it in temperatures above -15°C (-26°F)
The unit is IP67 and we guarantee it in any riding conditions. It is always advisable to rinse it off with water and dry it after, particularly muddy or dusty rides. The outer cover can snap off for even better cleaning.
We decided to keep the industrial design clean and the options for external power easier. We specified a waterproof and dust-proof USB port that is similar to those found in high-end waterproof smartphones.
