Karoo 2 stuck during bikepacking trip, lost ride, all routes, all profiles blank...
AnsweredHey, I'm in the middle of a trip on my phone in a 2G network and can't do any usb debugging or error logs.
I completed today's 100k leg of my trip. 30 minutes later I checked that it had not appeared on Strava despite the Karoo having a SIM. I start a wifi hotspot for the Karoo and open the ride again from Karoo's list or rides, tap the Strava icon again and press save. A few seconds later I see the Karoo booting on its own where I've put it down.
Now every time I try to start the Karoo it says "Failed to recover your ride" and "Proceed" as the only option. Todays ride is also completely missing from the rides, even though it was already completed and saved half an hour before any of this started! It shows up on dashboard.hammerhead.io but trying to open it just says "Activity not found".
All routes are gone from the device, saying "No routes available" on the Routes screen. Which is not handy when this is my navigator that is supposed to have the rest of my trip's routes on it....
Tapping on any profile from the main screen just results in a blank screen with no layouts. I can still start the activity and the timer at the top starts running but otherwise it's just a blank screen without any data.
This is a month old unit that I replaced my Garmin with. I did not take the Garmin or anything as a backup on the trip because that would seem a bit silly.
What can I do to continue my trip? Just hard reset the device and try to set it up again and link accounts and stuff in my tent tonight? That'll lose any chance of trying to recover today's ride of course. Any other ideas? What a mess...
EDIT: original submission form had eaten all line breaks for some reason, but editing them in worked

Hey Paul,
Thank you for posting here! We are sorry to hear about your experience with the Karoo on your trip.
Did the Karoo have sufficient charge while you were attempting to upload the ride to Strava? I do believe that the Karoo crashed out either due to a low battery or an internal process crash.
Could you log out of the Karoo from the hammerhead account & log back in? This should resync the missing routes & rides onto the Karoo again. Regarding the missing ride, you can attempt to locate the file on the internal storage once you have access to a PC/mac after you are back from your trip.
Please do feel free to write to us at support@hammerhad.io for further assistance!

Hey,
Update from a rest stop.
I spent the rest of the evening and next morning trying to recover the situation and these were the results:
- I realized I had a phone charger with a detachable cable with USB-C on both ends, so I activated developer mode on the Karoo and connected it to my phone. Flicking between MTP and PTP a couple of times in the developer settings made the Karoo appear as external storage for the phone.
- The "missing" ride was in the FitFiles folder and I was able to transfer it over to the phone for manual uploading later. It seems the Karoo was in some error state about syncing that it could not get out of, since whatever it was trying, there was nothing to recover. The complete ride was in it's internal storage. As I mentioned, the ride had been completed and saved half an hour earlier, not something that was mid-ride while it crashed for example.
- I tried to create a debug log but whenever it finished and I clicked on "send" or whatever the prompt button said, it displayed "No apps can perform this action.". I could also not find a dump file in the device memory to manually send later.
- I was not able to find any cache file, etc. to delete that would get the Karoo out of the recovery error, the missing routes, the missing profile screens and the general unusable state it was in, so I ended up doing a factory reset.
- After the reset and logging back in again with my Hammerhead account the device worked as usual, and the ride, that was missing while the device was in a jammed state, was visible in the Rides list again. Not sure if the factory reset does not clear the FitFiles folder or if logging in synced it back from the Hammerhead servers... but the latter would be really weird since the online dashboard still says "Activity not found". So where would it sync it from?
- I was also able to see my routes again and the activity profiles were functional once more. Some settings like dark mode and 24 hour clock had been reset though, so the profile stored as part of the account seems a bit inconsistent.
- What was quite the bummer though was that all offline map data was removed by the reset. This left me without the 3.7GB of maps that is automatically downloaded when selecting the country I'm in. No way this could be recovered on a 2G connection, so I had to continue with phone navigation (no mount though, lot's of phone-to-pocket action on the road) until later when I got to a Wifi and manually downloaded the critical parts.

The battery was at ~35% when this happened.

Couldn't quite find this one, but seems there have been similar ones with memory leaks and Strava upload troubles and whatnot. I happened to check the storage of the device before the reset by the way, and it was only using 6GB, so it had not filled it's memory with some endless loop that stopped it from functioning and neither did it warn about such a thing like one user in that thread mentions.
