Karoo ships with a host of apps designed to assist you with any ride goal. They are quick to setup so you can get out enjoying your rides with greater confidence. Our suite is on a constant update cycle and each app is tailored to give you the best biking software experience possible.
Every Karoo has a home screen where you can see your apps. At the bottom of the home screen is a launcher bar which enables a quick-start to any ride. Tap it and you have a two-step process to get you going:
- Choose your Profile which has your data screens and map preferences
- Add a route or make a route
The Ride app deals with all of your in-ride experience. This app will show your “Profiles” with your preferred data outputs and ride info. The app is designed to give you critical information in the clearest possible way. The amount of information, alerts and navigation instructions can be customized to suit you needs. It can include an auto-rotating, ride-optimized map, any biometric or ride-specific data and workout notifications.
Some of the questions around the ride app are listed below:
What is the recording interval for Karoo?
Karoo records at 1 data point per second on most sensors and location data. We are however investigating better ways to smooth altitude and location data using our incredibly capable operating system.
Does the Karoo auto start or stop?
Yes, Karoo can start or stop your ride recording automatically.
Where is my data saved?
Karoo logs all ride data for later review or live-processing. You can always access your ride data on your activity history or share it to Strava.
What happens if I exit the Ride app?
Karoo will still keep recording your ride and ensure you do not lose your data. You can always modify your route or data screens on your profile if you wish.
The Routes app allows for rapid route creation and modification. We decided to include our intuitive pin-dropping process to quickly customize any route in Karoo. You can share the route with anyone and it is always accessible through the Dashboard.
What maps does Hammerhead use?
Hammerhead uses a customized version of Mapbox tiles and datasets with OSM. We display the map information with our own cycling-specific coloration.
Does Karoo take GPX files?
Yes, Karoo automatically imports and manages a host of files on the Hammerhead Routes Website. We created this tool as an easy way to get files from your laptop, desktop or any other website. It's as simple as dragging the GPX file or pasting an activity URL into your web browser. Routes are automatically imported into the Karoo. We are also working on a tool that will allow you to modify any imported GPX file and possibly tweak the route.
Karoo enables the best navigation experience. The ride app’s in-ride alters will lead you through your route.
How does navigation work in-ride?
There are two modes of navigation that the Karoo is capable of:
- Turn by turn - this mode will work with any route created on the Hammerhead apps or an imported route that matches existing road or trail networks. You will receive turn instructions at every junction.
- Compass - this mode will work on GPX files or routes that are cutting new territory. Some trails just don’t exist in maps so we show you the route and keep you on track with a general bearing.
What happens if I go off track?
Karoo has two modes to deal with off track.
One, Karoo will reroute and get you back to the closest, next waypoint.
Two, If you need to finish a specific course Karoo will alert you and tell you to retrace your steps.
Profiles are presets for data screens. You customize what is shown while in-ride. You can choose to display three to eight data fields. Each profile can have multiple screens which you can flip through in-ride.
